Job Description

The UI Designer/Developer will be an integral member of the Student Success Strategic Initiatives (SSSI) team for a University in California. This individual will play an active, collaborative role in the design of the Student Success Dashboard and lead role in ensuring that accessibility requirements are incorporated. The UI Designer/Developer will use modern design tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and will be skilled in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery. The UI Designer/Developer will apply these tools and their expertise to create innovative charts, graphs, and interactive web interfaces. The individual will also maintain and extend existing SSSI websites and create new work with the team to create new ones. Working with data scientists, full-stack developers, and content experts, the UI Designer/Developer will create data visualization pages that facilitate insights and actionable decision making by university faculty, staff, and administrators and that inform the general public on a variety of Student Success topics that fall under the purview of the SSSI team.

The flagship product of the SSSI team, the Student Success Dashboard, leverages 15+ years of data collected from 23 campuses. It employs data visualization and data analytic techniques in order to help our faculty, staff and administrators better understand graduation rates and achievement gaps, diagnose contributing factors, and target responses based on these discoveries. Loosely speaking, it’s Moneyball for the, only instead of measuring success in baseball wins and championships, we measure it in increased graduation rates of our students. Essential Job Functions (Please list responsibilities here)

• Knowledge of user-centered design processes, information and interaction design approaches, web design best practices, and web standards
• Skilled in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and JQuery - highly skilled with Adobe Creative Suite.
• Expertise in web accessibility standards and experience developing websites according to
Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act and the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI)
• Ability to work collaboratively with developers, data scientists, and other team members
• A desire to do work that has meaningful social value

Required Education

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year university or college or equivalent combination of education and experience with a minimum of 5 years of related experience.

Required Experience

• HTML with the ability to hand-code according to W3C standards
• JavaScript and JQuery

• CSS and responsive design

• Adobe Creative Suite

• Developing highly-engaging print designs

• User-centered design processes, information and interaction design approaches, web design best practices, and web standards
• Browser compatibility issues across various platforms

• Working knowledge and ability to apply theories, principles, practices, and techniques in web design and maintenance, and software and web site interaction design.
• Ability to take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved.
